> According to a recent poll, McArthur Court was deemed as a Pac-10
visiting team's least favorite place to play and in 1995 Sports Illustrated
listed it as one of the 12 toughest places in the country to play
college basketball.
> Oregon's fans are also part of the ambience. The Ducks have
ranked annually near the top of attendance figures in the conference
and the setting is the favorite of the many television producers
and announcers who cover games at Mac Court. The flavor is easy to
capture for their audiences. |

Built three years
before the Great Depression began, McArthur Court -- known to Oregon
basketball faithful as Mac Court or "The Pit" -- is home to men's
and women's basketball, wrestling, and volleyball teams. According
to a 2001 poll in Sports Illustrated, it is opposing basketball teams'
least favorite place to play in the Pac-10 and one of the most intimidating
arenas in the country. Mac Court was built in 1926 and named after
alumnus Clifton N. McArthur '01, a student-athlete and the university's
first student body president. The facility was often called the "Igloo"
after its erection because of its shape and stark white color. It
was paid for entirely by student fees and regularly was the site of
student dances and events until the Erb Memorial Student Union was
finished in 1950. |
